How to Pack for a Move: Room-by-Room Packing Tips

Good packing protects your belongings and makes moving day faster — which matters when you're paying by the hour. Here's how professional packers approach it.

Supplies you'll need

• Small boxes for books and heavy items; medium boxes for most things; large boxes only for light items like bedding.
• Packing paper (not newspaper — ink transfers), bubble wrap and quality packing tape.
• Dish pack boxes and cell dividers for glasses.
• Wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes and mattress bags.
• A thick marker and coloured labels or tape for each room.

Pack in the right order

1. Storage areas, out-of-season clothes and décor (3–4 weeks before).
2. Books, spare linens and rarely used kitchen items (2 weeks before).
3. Most of the kitchen, living room and closets (the week before).
4. Daily essentials and an "open first" box (the night before).

Room-by-room tips

Kitchen

Wrap plates individually and stand them on their edge, like records — they're stronger that way. Fill gaps with paper so nothing shifts. Keep boxes under about 20 kg so they can be carried safely.

Bedroom and closets

Wardrobe boxes save hours: clothes go straight from the closet rod to the box and back. Leave light clothing in dresser drawers if the dresser is sturdy, but remove anything heavy.

Living room and electronics

Photograph cable connections before unplugging. Use original boxes for TVs if you have them; otherwise use a TV box or ask your movers to wrap them. Pack remotes and cables together in a labelled bag.

Bathroom

Tape lids on liquids and pack them upright in a plastic bag inside the box. Keep medications with you, not on the truck.

Label like a pro

Label each box on the top and on one side with the room and a short description. Number your boxes and keep a simple list — it makes it easy to confirm everything arrived.
